Economic Stimulus Act of 2008

$$Get Uncle Sam to Help Your Business in 2008$$

Although the business incentives have been overshadowed in the news by the
individual tax rebates, the business tax breaks are very valuable.

This can be broken down into two primary areas:

Expensing Election for Small Business

The new law doubles the amount of equipment that can be expensed in the year of purchase. For equipment purchased (and placed in service) for tax years beginning in 2008, 100% of the cost of the equipment can be written off for tax purposes, UP TO $250,000. This applies only in 2008. If a business purchases more than $1,050,000 in equipment in 2008, this expensing election is not available, but see bonus depreciation below. Remember, the equipment has to be placed in service in 2008 to qualify, so you need to act this year to be eligible!

Temporary Bonus Depreciation

Congress has used bonus depreciation in the past to encourage business investment (post September 11). The new law allows qualifying taxpayers 50% of the cost of qualifying equipment as first year bonus depreciation. As with the expensing election above, this provision is for equipment placed in service in 2008. The 50% bonus depreciation can be taken even if you exceed the $1,050,000 of equipment purchased in 2008, so even larger businesses can take advantage of this provision. Also, bonus depreciation is only available for new equipment (not used). Remember, this bonus depreciation is on top of regular depreciation claimed for tax purposes.

As you can see, these provisions have the ability to greatly enhance the return on investment for purchasing equipment in 2008. There can be great tax benefits from making that buying decision NOW. If you have any questions, contact your Account Manager at Miami Industrial Trucks, Inc.

NOTE: As always, consult your tax advisor to make sure these benefits will be applicable to your particular situation.

Should You Purchase a Pre-Owned or New Piece of Equipment?

Your real decision should start with your equipment usage and application. Today, too often companies overlook the economics of purchasing a used forklift, aerial work platform or an industrial sweeper and scrubber. A good “rule of thumb” is if a piece of equipment is going to be used one to four hours a day, a used unit is a good recommendation. Over four hours a day usage we recommend new. Many times we see companies putting a significant amount of repair money into a dead horse when consideration of a newer used unit might be the answer. The older vehicles are harder to get parts for and at times can be down due to availability.

The cost of a 5-year-old used forklift is usually about 60% of a new one. Miami Industrial Trucks, Inc. has over 100 pieces of used forklifts for sale (rider, walkie or narrow aisle). Units are either gas or electric powered. In addition to forklifts, we have available used scissor lifts, booms, aerial work platforms, industrial sweepers and scrubbers. Give our Corporate Used Truck Department a call today (800-444-4808) and ask for a copy of our recently released used equipment booklet.
